FREE TOOLS Amps to Volt-Amps Calculator

Amps to Volt-Amps Calculator

A Free Amps to Volt-Amps Calculator is an online electrical tool that converts current in amps (A) into apparent power in volt-amperes (VA) when the circuit voltage and phase configuration are known.

What Are Volt-Amps (VA)?

Volt-amperes (VA) measure apparent power in an AC electrical circuit.

Unlike watts, VA does not necessarily represent the actual power consumed by a load. For AC equipment, the difference between VA and watts is related to the power factor.

The basic relationship is:

VA = Volts × Amps

Amps to VA Formula

For a single-phase circuit:

VA = V × A

For a three-phase circuit:

VA = √3 × V × A

Where:

  • VA = apparent power
  • V = voltage
  • A = current
  • √3 ≈ 1.732

Example: Single-Phase

Suppose an electrical device operates at:

  • Voltage = 120 V
  • Current = 10 A

Then:

VA = 120 × 10

VA = 1,200 VA

The apparent power is 1,200 VA, or 1.2 kVA.

Example: Three-Phase

Consider a balanced three-phase system with:

  • Voltage = 480 V
  • Current = 10 A

Then:

VA = 1.732 × 480 × 10

VA ≈ 8,314 VA

So the apparent power is approximately 8.31 kVA.

VA vs. Watts

VA and watts are related but aren’t always equal in AC circuits.

The relationship is:

W = VA × Power Factor

For example, if a device has:

  • Apparent power = 1,200 VA
  • Power factor = 0.8

Then:

W = 1,200 × 0.8

W = 960 W

Therefore, the device has approximately 960 watts of real power.

What Does a Free Amps to Volt-Amps Calculator Do?

A calculator can help determine:

  • Amps to VA
  • VA to kVA
  • Single-phase apparent power
  • Three-phase apparent power
  • Transformer capacity
  • UPS requirements
  • Generator sizing
  • Electrical equipment loads

Why Use an Amps to VA Calculator?

This tool is useful for electricians, electrical engineers, contractors, technicians, and homeowners who need to estimate the apparent power of electrical equipment.

It can be especially helpful when selecting appropriately rated:

  • Transformers
  • Generators
  • UPS systems
  • Inverters
  • Electrical panels
  • Power supplies

Important Note

Amps alone cannot be converted to VA. You need at least the voltage and the appropriate phase configuration.

For single-phase systems:

VA = V × A

For three-phase systems:

VA = √3 × V × A

In Short

A Free Amps to Volt-Amps Calculator provides a quick way to calculate apparent electrical power from voltage and current. It is useful for electrical load calculations, transformer and generator sizing, UPS selection, and understanding the relationship between amps, volts, VA, kVA, watts, and power factor.
